Cairnsmore of Fleet is one of the more familiar mountains in Galloway, as it is very visible to motorists travelling along the A75. It is one of the few with a path to the summit at 2,331ft (711 metres). It affords fine views over the Solway Firth and its comparative accessibility makes it a popular choice with tourists. This walk describes the seven-mile 'tourist route' which may be readily accomplished in little more than four hours. For the longer, more challenging 'connoisseur's route' onto Cairnsmore, Walk 1987 is recommended. A third option is afforded by Walk 3511.

Great walk, easy to follow pay and as described apart from at point 10 there is now a small gate within a new metal main gate so no stile - easier for humans and dogs alike. The ‘new’ car park does extend the walk. My Garmin made it a total of 8.16 miles.

Straightforward walk over well defined paths and easy to follow instructions from author. Unfortunately it was overcast when we did it and thus missed out on the views but decided instead that we would do it for the challenge. Dog friendly walk, only one stile (At Point 10) but the gate can be opened to let our four legged friends through with ease. It seems that the route at the start has changed slightly since this guide was written. When you pass Cairnsmore Farm (Point 4) after about 150m there is a sign directing you along a shrub/tree lined path to the right. After about 200m this path rejoins the lane and you then turn left and walk for about 250m where you arrive at Point 5. I suspect these changes have been made to divert people away from walking past houses where the old car park would have been. This section of the lane is now clearly signed 'private'.
