Glen Trool: Fell of Eschoncan - Pulnagashel Glen - Loch Trool

If you are the sort of walker who, like me, prefers to get the hard work over with early on, you will choose to start this walk from the Bruce's Stone car park. You will immediately ascend steeply via a grassy path onto the Fell of Eschoncan, offering unrivalled views of Loch Trool. A path leads across moorland onto a forest road, which gradually descends the Pulnagashel Glen, through conifer belts but also affording fine open views.
After drinks and a sit-down at Stroan Bridge Visitor Centre, you proceed via a delightful path alongside the Water of Minnoch, then cross the Water of Trool and continue upstream. Just off-route is a memorial to six Covenanters shot here in 1685, their tomb being the earliest example of what became the self-imposed life-work of 'Old Mortality' (see Additional Information). After traversing the former Caldons Campsite, your route continues along the southern shore of Loch Trool, passing the site of the 1307 battle, rounding the head of the loch and returning to the car park by way of Bruce's Stone.
