A charming and easy circular walk along the banks of the Trent & Mersey Canal. The walk takes you along the banks of the canal, on good towpaths (suitable for small children to walk - with supervision of course) to the junction of the canal with the River Trent and the River Derwent. If you look carefully into the canal and rivers you will see the extent of the undertow, caused by the meeting of the three waters. Retracing your steps for a short distance to the last lock on the canal, you can cross and follow a footpath across to the banks of the River Derwent. The walk then follows the River Derwent for a small section, to return via a short stretch of metalled road back to the canal path.

07/09/11 - I did this walk today with my wife and we really enjoyed it. For me this is the third time I have done this walk. Path to river Trent is temporarily closed and a new bridge across river Trent is being built. At point 4, stiles near ponds are dodgy and a bit dangerous, so take care. I’ve done this walk twice now, but never got round to writing a review… so here it is. A very straight forward and easy walk, but a very interesting walk with beautiful scenery. Lots of bird life, even llamas in a field, boat yards with boats of all types, locks, and of course the rivers where they merge. Village of Shardlow is really beautiful, with wonderful pubs. Good place to stop for drink and a bite. I have thoroughly enjoyed this walk. Did this walk, once in the autumn and again in the depth of snowy winter. I would thoroughly recommend this walk. An excellent walk enjoyed on a cool crisp day. Unfortunately the bridge at 459308 no longer exists and the forward progress stops at this point. You can still see the effect the joining of the rivers and the canal have on the water surface. The lack of the bridge does not marr the enjoyment of the walk. Ken Hannett & Elaine Cooper
