Aboyne - Craigendinnie Circular

The car park in the centre of Aboyne is the starting point for this walk. After crossing the village green, it follows a pavement beside the River Dee. Once across the river it leads to the start of the Fungle road (an old drove road leading to Tarfside in Glen Esk). After a flat start, this route then starts to rise quite steeply. On leaving the main track the walk takes you up a tree-lined path which offers some spectacular views over the River Dee and the village of Aboyne. Some these views are becoming restricted as the trees grow, but later good views can still be enjoyed. The steady climb continues through more mature woodland before descending quite steeply. The route then turns southwards and begins to rise again as it circles round Craigendinnie Hill. Finally the walk returns to the Fungle and descends to lower ground. At the bottom of the hill a branch off the main path leads to a circular path round the picturesque Birsemore Loch (also known as The Queen's Loch). This is a beautiful small loch lined with trees and backed with distant hills. Finally one retraces one's route to the start.

Enjoyed this walk - the quite steep climb gave a gentle sense of achievement. Views are very limited, but the woodland is very pleasant. The guidance was accurate and easy to follow. Thanks

A good walk but as the previous comment mentions there is now a lot of tree cover and there is only really one good viewpoint between waymarks 8 and 9. The track can be quite muddy just past 8 but the turnoff is fairly clear. Once away from the houses of Aboyne and Birsemore, this is a very dog friendly walk.

This is good walk - though somewhat enclosed by trees now. At the time of my walk (July 2013) timber was being extracted and paths were muddy. Possibly due to this I missed the turn off to the right at waymark 9 so had to complete the walk on the opposite direction. The gate at Waymark 9 is perfectly obvious and only 15 metres from the track! At the time I passed there was an information notice about Capercaillie on a post at the entrance. I added a small cairn for the benefit of other people like me! Th reverse circuit was a fine walk too!
