This super little walk in the Cotswolds wanders from the charming setting of Adlestrop Post Office and visits Chastleton Church, which dates back to 1100AD and is open to the public Wed - Sat 1pm - 5pm, March - October; closed Sun, Mon, Tues.

Here also stands the wonderful National Trust property of Chastleton House. Leafy glades on footpaths and bridleways, sometimes on country lanes, lead through gorgeous scenes and allow spectacular views, taking in Chastleton Barrow Fort, an Iron Age hill-fort. An altogether wonderful little walk, historical as well as intensely beautiful.

In reply to Michael Corfield's previous comment.... At waymark 7 is the point where we said visit the Chastleton Barrow Fort, and we didn't mention Barrow House. Although there is a sign on the gate indicating a Private Drive, this is still a right of way for foot passengers, (according to the OS map) all the way to the house and beyond, also there is a ROW across the Barrow which continues across parkland to Chastleton House as stated. There is no need to use the road to get to Chastleton House. There appears to be no fingerpost at the Driveway entrance which would help with any confusion.

Oct 2022 - 7 years after last doing this walk we enjoyed it once again, this time in autumn. Note regarding waypoint 7. There is no sign to indicate the driveway is for Barrow House, only that it is a private driveway. We chose to stay on the road to Chastelton House, but I suspect if we had been bolder and walked up the driveway for 50m we would have found the path to Barrow Fort. Note regarding my earlier comment about being easier to go straight from waypoint 9 to waypoint 11. If you want to do this, take the footpath opposite the church but go to the right to the smaller car park. Once in the car park turn left to join the MacMillan Way through an avenue of trees to reach waypoint 11 ahead.

Superb autumn day. The combination of autumn colour and sunlight through the tree canopy between waymarks 3 and 4 was a real treat. At waymark 9 (Chastleton) we decided to extend the walk to Evenlode returning via Horn Lane to waymark 11 to complete the walk.

Delightful walk on a spring day. The section between waypoints 5 and 6 offers a perfect spot for a picnic lunch ! I would agree with a previous comment, that having visited the church, it is probably better to simply carry on to waypoint 11. The return to waypoint 8 does allow you to walk through the pretty Peasewell wood, but in wet weather the bridleway looks impassable.

A couple of points we noted: Walk done 30/09/12. 1) A pub is mentioned in the features but there is no later reference in the instructions. 2) Point 9 - If Chastleton House is closed then the car park is also closed with locked and flimsy gates. There is (as yet) no pedestrian alternative to the gates. We were lucky in that an NT lady was there and she let us out. Would it be a viable alternative to go straight across from the Church to rejoin the walk at the metal gate at Point 11? (Even more so given that for us the bridleway of Point 10 was a swamp!) 3) Point 11 - States "go ahead on a well-defined path". The path is not well defined if, as it was for us; the field has been ploughed!
