Albuñuelas, Barrancos del Juncal and de Torres and the route of Al Idrisi, Lecrín Valley, Granada

This route climbs above the orange and lemon groves north towards the Sierra de Albunuelas, with tremendous views south over the Lecrín Valley, Giralda at 1,431m and the Sierra de las Guajaras before dropping back to the village. There is choice of bars or restaurant and chance to see the pretty village where mules still work daily and not much has changed in a century. The citrus crops are made possible by the Lecrin Valley's microclimate and the irrigation systems in place since Moorish times.

Parts of the route are ascribed to Al-Sharif Al Idrisi Al Qurtubi, born in Ceuta, Spain, 1099 and educated in Cordoba, a direct descendant of the Muhammad and regarded as a great geographer and cartographer. Al Idrisi was much travelled and his books were translated into Latin. Columbus used a map which was originally taken from Al Idrisi's work.
