A very pleasant circuit from Appleby, starting from the train station on the Settle to Carlisle line. Dufton is a pretty village at the base of the Pennines, where there is a pub for a halfway stop.

The route starts through fields and then goes into a mixed woodland. You emerge on the other side, cross a stream and follow a beautifully built dry-stone wall through more fields. A section through a steeply-sided wooded gorge leads to Dufton. The Stag at Dufton is a friendly place to stop, with good food. The return is over more fields and then a final section where you retrace your steps from the outward journey.

The route links well with the High Cup Nick walk (2539) or the shorter Dufton Pike circuit (44), allowing you to do these using public transport.

Lovely walk and on the whole the instructions are great. However, the lane in 3 down to the farm now has a locked gate across it- so you need to take the footpath directly in front of it on the right. Follow the path across another stile and through two fields staying on the left of them. Almost at the end of the second field there is a stile in the fence on the left. Cross this and then head diectly straight across this field to the back of the farm and the barns in 4. The walk between stiles and the footbridge in 13 is longer than you expect and there appears to be a stile between the one mentioned and the bridge. Large dog owners beware. The stiles are really not doggy friendly - we ended up having to man("dog?)handle our German Shepherd across many of them! He may have enjoyed it - we didn't! Try the Post Office Pantry in Dufton for tea and cake!
