The 'bright, rose-bowered, garden-encircled seaside village' of Auchencairn was once a centre of smuggling, as the name of its public house recalls. Here are two walks in one: a 'country' leg almost entirely along lanes, farm roads and tracks and a 'seaside' leg which circumambulates a promontory. Together, the two legs form a varied, figure-of-eight, seven-mile route.

Information for Dog Owners: subject always to the normal precautions to be observed by dog-owners when walking in sheep country, this walk is considered suitable for biddable dogs.

This looks as if it would be a very good walk: the area is very attractive. We had planned to do just half of it - the sea part. It had rained heavily prior to our walk. However, we initially hit a patch of very heavy mud: cows who had shared the field had churned it up badly, there was no defined path, and it was a quagmire. When we moved onto the areas with duckboards, we found that a number of slats were broken, and that some of the side supports were in very poor shape. We were able to cross this without any problems, but one would need to take care. We ended our walk when the duckboards came to an end, leaving us with a big step down into what looked a very wet and marshy area. If the weather has been wet, one would need to approach this walk wearing heavy walking boots rather than shoes. We will try it again later in the year - but only (if this happens in Galloway) - if it has been dry!
