Save Our Footpaths - get off the beaten track, this circular walk includes footpaths that are not often used. A very rural route with hardly any roads with very pleasant but not spectacular scenery which includes a lot of lush meadows. The first part is the most difficult and earns the walk its moderate grade - and is a challenge. All of the stiles are old but in good order and the gates are all field gates, some not in good order and some very difficult to unfasten. With the route being little used the footpaths are invisible and careful navigation is required to determine the location the stiles ahead. Some hedges have been removed; fields partitioned with electric fences; and stiles towards the end of the walk may be partly overgrown with hawthorn so taking secateurs could be useful. (Always take them myself). However, continuing from Venetian Marina (photo on the right), the return part of the walk is along a canal footpath which is a very pleasant gentle stroll with numerous passing boats to enjoy watching. Many of the canal structures are original, and consequently most of them are grade II listed. This walk includes instructions for walkers from moored canal boats.

The walk is suitable for older teenagers, senior citizens and anyone in-between. Difficult for dogs, and hopeless for wheelchairs and buggies. Suitable footwear will be anything stout and flat soled in summer, but wear boots after very heavy rain and in winter due to the abundance of long wet lush grass. Avoid wearing shorts as you will encounter not only hawthorn but also nettles. There are refreshments and toilets at the pub at the start, and half way round at Venetian Marine. There are picnic tables at the start of the towpath section. If you book in advance, you should be able to get a good meal with a drink at the end; an excellent finish to a challenging walk.
