Lindisfarne was central to the development of Christianity in the North-East; the magnificently illustrated Lindisfarne Gospel was created here and St Cuthbert's last years were spent on the island. The abbey, visitor centre and castle are all well worth a visit. This route however, does not permit more than a brief visit - Lindisfarne is totally cut off from the mainland at low tide and close attention must be paid to timings. See the Additional Information section for more detail. We first cross the vast Goswick Sands to gain the island by The Snook, then continue to the village and castle. The return by the Pilgrim's Way is marked by poles and waterproof boots are mandatory.

Please note that the car-park at the start of this walk is shut and looks as though it has been for a while. It is blocked with concrete boulders. We did manage to park at the side of the road in front of the car-park but there isn't a lot of space.
