A lovely walk, which starts from the lane where we have suggested you park your car. The lane rises sharply uphill and as you pass a bungalow on your left you leave the tarmac lane and follow a grassed path past a mobile phone transmitter, before a left turn takes you on the steady ascent of the hill. The path has fields on either side usually frequented by grazing sheep (dogs should of course be kept under control). There are plenty of rabbits and other wildlife to be seen during the walk. Keep a lookout for buzzards and other overhead fliers. The Clashmach Hill is covered in whins (gorse) and is spectacular in the spring, attracting bees and butterflies with its heady scent. The views of the hills and surrounding countryside as you progress up the hill are stunning, with the town of Huntly and the River Deveron glistening below.
The upper part of the walk is exposed, mainly rough grass, but a path to the trig point to the left of the ridge is fairly easy to locate. Here you have a 360-degree panoramic view of all the surrounding hills, including (clockwise from Huntly) the Glen of Foudlands Wind Farms, Bennachie hills (Mither Tap), Tao O'Noth, The Buck, Ben Rinnes, Ben Aigin, Knoch Hill and the Moray coast.
The best way down is to retrace your footsteps.
