Starting from Cómpeta the walk climbs rapidly to the impressively situated football pitch above the village and the takes a long circuit right around the Cerro Verde massif climbing over the Puerto Blanquillo. Throughout the whole of this part of the walk you are treated to fabulous views of the surrounding mountains and the Mediterranean Coast from Malaga to Torrox and Nerja. After the Puerto Blanquillo you drop down into the Cueva del Malero valley through the heart of the Sierra to The Fabrico del Luz recreation area close to Canillas de Albaida, and then back to Cómpeta. You can avoid the initial steep climb at the start of the route by getting someone to drive you up to the football pitch above Cómpeta, and you can shorten the route by arranging for a taxi to pick you up at the Fabrico del Luz.

Great walk. Took us just under 6 hours with a short lunch stop. Very steep climb out of the village. Moderate makes it sound easier than it is. We're fit but I would put this in the same league as climbing Maroma. From Puerto Blanquillo, much easier. The stream on 1 January 2011 was quite a torrent after heavy rain. Crossing by stepping stones was very tricky in some places and required long jumps! There is no bridge at the Fabrica, but it was possible to jump across.

At point 20 - near FABRICA De LALUZ - there is no bridge remaining. We did this walk last year Jan '09 and were able to cross low slow stream but this year late Jan. 2010 had great difficulty as there has been weeks of heavy rainfall(wettest festive season for 60 years!)

We followed this walk in September. All in all good directions but we found the directions slightly misleading around the farm with the aggressive dogs - we suggest you bear left around the farm and then right below the farm. There is also a short cut that saves a lot of time. Instead of bearing right from the football pitch through the urbanisation, turn left along the track into the natural park. Eventually you will meet a junction marked with cairns. Take the right hand turn. Follow this track and you will see a sign marked 'To Lucero' you can either climb this steep track (hard work) or continue on the main track which will meet it eventually (a more gentle though longer route). This track will meet the route in the walk above Casa de La Mina. Wonderful walk - from Las Colmenillas which is about 15-20 minutes from the football pitch it took us 6 hours to reach the Fabrica.
