Congleton, a rural market town, received its Royal Charter in 1272. From the town hall follow Canal Street to the canal-bridge and access the canal. Follow the canal to Ackers Crossing and then ascend to Mow Cop summit.

The folly (National Trust) is a relatively recent addition to the skyline. The Squire of Rode Hall decided that the skyline needed enhancing, so the castle was partially built and has never been completed. It gave work to local people and made the view from Rode Hall that bit better. Mow Cop's 'Old Man of Mow' is a finger of rock which was left after the quarry was last used. The Old Man used to be a rock climber's paradise, but now is unsafe. Mow Cop was also the first meeting place for John Wesley, which led to the formation of the Wesleyian Methodist Church.

Along the ridge leaving Mow Cop there are excellent views over the Cheshire Plain and the Staffordshire Moorlands.

Completed this walk 05/01/19. Really enjoyed this walk, instructions are very clear, excellent views throughout. Lots of variety along the way including the canal, railway, Mow Cop, a lovely ridge & a pub at half way. Lots of parking opportunities at the start. Pleasantly surprised at this time of year there was hardly any mud.A most enjoyable half day romp.

Another top quality walk from this site. Been meaning to visit the Mow Cop Castle for some time... and it didn't disappoint. Easy walking along the canal and a stiff climb to the castle - pick a clear day, as the views are stunning. The whole of Cheshire laid out before you. Walk back had great views along the ridge, although there was more traffic on the road than you would expect. We finished at Congleton Train Station, where there is a CAMRA Good Beer Guide pub that does excellent food, ready for refreshments. Perfect day. Completed this walk 14th Aug. 2014. My thanks to Eric Davies for this walk, directions were clear and all paths & tracks were open. This was a fabulous walk with varying landscapes, topped off by the Old Man of Mow and Mow Cop Castle. I also visited the Primitive Methodist Chapel before making my return journey to Congleton. I would highly recommend this walk for the views and historical interest.
