An interesting short walk through this charming compact city that includes a castle and cathedral, both classified as World Heritage sites. The route also includes a lovely section of riverside walking both outside and inside the famous peninsula.
This short tour around Durham City starts from New Elvet, travels the length of Old Elvet and continues on past the entrance to Durham Prison. The route then enters Maiden Castle Wood to skirt around an old disused school before emerging onto Whinney Hill, with great views overlooking the city. From here the walk descends through the woods to intersect the River Wear at the University Playing-Fields for a riverside stroll that leads into and around the peninsula. The route then leaves the peninsula, rises above the river and passes along an old cobbled lane that reveals great views of the cathedral and castle. The walk then re-enters the peninsula to visit the iconic Norman cathedral. Leaving here, the route passes down the narrow, picturesque Saddler Street and through the marketplace to end the walk at the P&R bus stop.
