Starting from the edge of Fordham Heath, use a short section of quiet country lane then field- paths south of the River Colne, eventually to reach the pleasant little village of Ford Street. Walk through the village, crossing the Colne in the process and reach a point where you can again use field paths and a section of the Essex Way to walk east (now on the north side of the river). When you reach Cook's Mill (now a private home), walk through its grounds and again cross the Colne. A final section of country lane and then a short walk through woodland brings you back to your start point.

Tried to walk this one today, but it looks as though the directions have changed. When you go through the gate at waymark 6,you now cross a large bridge over the river. On the other side there are numerous waymarks pointing all over the place. The directions state you turn west to reach a road via a footbridge.Got to the road, turned right, but no river bridge.Retraced my steps back to waymark 6,and tried the other 2 paths, none led to a road.Couldnt complete the walk as the footpaths must have been re-routed.Will try another time and update with revised directions

There have been some changes between points 4 and 6. There are new fences up and they are laying a pipeline. We managed to complete walk, but felt that we were not on a footpath for this section at all. Might need to be re-walked and updated.

Walked this route in late September and found it very enjoyable. Paths obviously not well used but nettles only a minor problem in one or two places. The views were excellent. (n.b. at step 18 we found the hedge was on our right.) The Old Queen's Head proved very inviting and we found it a good half-way port of call.
