The little square of fishermen's cottages and the pub that make up the heart of the little hamlet of Low Newton-by-the-Sea are almost picture-postcard perfect. This walk takes you through the hamlet and then along the coast with its stunning seascapes to the mighty coastal fortress of Dunstanbrough Castle, now a ruin, but still clearly a symbol of power along this castle-studded coastline. Take time to visit the castle if possible. 500 years after the castle saw battle and with Britian under attack, there were built thousands of 'pill-boxes' to defend against German invasion, many of these are passed and can be visited on this walk too. From the castle the walk takes you along easy paths to the village of Embleton with its fine pubs before returning across the fields and alongside a bird sanctuary to Low Newton. History, glorious views and the odd pub en route; it doesn't get much better than this!
