Gilwern - Canal - Old Station - Clydach - Old Iron Works - Clydach Gorge - Canal - Gilwern

Today, the Clydach Gorge is an attraction for walkers and photographers, but its past was very different. On this walk we sample the Monmouthshire & Brecon Canal, now a much used leisure facility, as well as the waterfalls of the lower Clydach Gorge. To see how this relates to its industrial past we pay a visit to the ironworks, where information boards fill in some of the gaps. The climb up from Gilwern to the Old Station provides wonderfull views, while the lane down to Clydach provides easy walking.

The work on reconfiguring the A465 is still continuing and it has affected the walk. We actually started the walk from the (free) public carpark in Gilwern and then walked up to the bridge over the canal. The Lion Hotel and the bridge mentioned in Instruction 2 have both been demolished, but a new bridge has been constructed next to the canal bridge and it is a case of crossing the road bridge and then turning right and walking uphill to reach the junction with "Old Trap Lane". It is only approx. 30 metres to reach the gate mentioned on Instruction 4. In regard to Instruction 7 the underpass was sealed off but with a nicely laid path, it is likely the underpass will be re-opened in due course. It was a case of returning to the road and following it under a flyover over the A465 when we re-joined the walk instructions.

We did this walk with our adult children and their other halves on Bank Holiday Monday at the end of May. The parking area is still as per the walk notes but the path you take at WM 4 is very overgrown. There are no views to enjoy until you have fought your way to the top. As there is major road building happening on the Head of the Valleys road, the A465, the underpass mentioned is not there. We therefore carried on walking down and out of the village and then under the A465 then left and then right over the cattle grid mentioned in WM 8. We somehow missed the gate past the house in WM 11 but a man told us to go through the gate at the end of the road and then left down some steps and we ended up on the bridge in WM12 and then turned left once across and followed the rest of the instructions. Enjoyed seeing the waterfalls.
