This circular walk from Harrietsham on the North Downs, via High Wood and the Ringlestone Inn, covers varied terrain including pasture, woodland and the ancient Pilgrims' Way.
Harrietsham is an attractive mix of old and new properties. There have been important archaeological finds from the Bronze Age, Iron Age and from Roman and Saxon settlement. These earliest areas of settlement were subsequently abandoned, leaving the ancient Parish Church of Saxon origin detached from its village. The oldest houses in the community today, mostly Tudor, are to be found at East Street. The Roebuck Inn is in West Street and serves food.
The walk starts from the railway station and quickly takes you into the Kent countryside, passing farms and crossing sheep pasture and woodlands. It also takes in the Pilgrims' Way (North Downs Way) which was once the mediaeval equivalent of a motorway, linking as it did the great cities of Winchester and Canterbury, with a spur off to the port of Dover.
