This walk starts opposite a pub in Hawkshaw at the edge of the village. The first section climbs up an unmarked lane and across a brook and fields to reach the edge of Holcombe Moor Training Centre. From the rifle range it climbs up to some ruins (old farmhouse) before dropping down to cross a culverted brook. You then climb up through some woodland and across the hillside to reach a junction. The junction is the start and end of the smaller of the two loops mentioned in the short description. This loop goes along a lane below Peel Tower before dropping down a setted bridleway then climbing to reach the mews of a hall. After walking through the grounds of the mews you return to the junction. From here it drops down to a brook via a series of steps. The brook is crossed via stepping-stones, near a small waterfall, before crossing a second brook and climbing to reach a main road via lanes and fields. You walk through the edge of a local nature reserve on this section. The road is crossed and several footpaths are followed in a half-circle to reach the road again. This is the section which includes the ladder-stile. After crossing the road for a second time the road is followed back to the start.
