Despite its short length, this is a very pleasant circular stroll near Muirkirk with ancient transport connections as it includes the embankment of a dismantled railway, the towpath of an overgrown canal and an old Stage Coach road. The first section of the route is along a section of the long distance Aye Way walk giving good views over the Ayr valley, (photo on the right). The walk takes you through woods and along a very pleasant rural farm track and across a section of open, bleak and wild moorland. The whole of the route is along good paths with well-maintained timber bridges and kissing gates.
The walk is suitable for children, teenagers, senior citizens and anyone in-between. It is excellent for dogs, but hopeless for wheelchairs and difficult for buggies due to the old kissing gates and a short flight of rustic steps. Suitable footwear will be anything flat soled and there should be no problems for anyone wearing shorts. There are no refreshments, toilets, picnic tables or bench seats on this route.
