A challenging and enjoyable walk around the roads and tracks of Upper Teesdale, savouring the remoteness and rugged beauty of the moors bordering Cow Green Reservoir and Cauldron Snout Waterfall, returning to Langdon Beck along a tricky riverside section of the Pennine Way. The whole walk lies within the Moor House National Nature Reserve.
The walk starts with a little road- walking, followed by flat field-walking before a further short section of road-walking. The route then climbs up through fields onto Cow Rake Rigg for a rough moorland walk that intersects the surfaced road leading up to Cow Green Reservoir. A nice, easy, mainly flat section then follows with a little downhill walking on a surfaced track leading to Cauldron Snout, where a tricky scramble over boulders is required to ascend the length of the waterfall. The next section of the walk takes in riverside scrambles over rocks and boulders, followed by stretches over marshy ground on stone slabs and duck-boards. Finally, mainly flat field and riverside strolling completes the varied terrain.
