This is a hard walk, over the Plomb du Cantal, the highest point of the department that should (if it's not cloudy!) offer fabulous views. It will take all day but offers a wide variety of walking, from steep mountain ascents to flat walking through woodland.

I suggest taking the first train of the day from Murat to Le Lioran and walking back to Murat. The one hotel I saw on the road in Le Lioran, a ski resort, did not look inspiring but there is a wide selection in the nice village of Murat.

Options to reduce the distance and difficulty include taking the ski lift to the top of the Plomb du Cantal or arranging a taxi to and from Albepierre.

For food and drink there are cafes and bars in Albepierre. Albepierre was my first option for refilling the water bottles at a fountain. There is also a restaurant at Plomb du Cantal but it was closed when I did the walk in May.
