Llandrillo gives easy access to the Berwyns from the west - old tracks and bridleways crossing the range lead to a take-off point onto the more demanding open ground.

Starting from the village of Llandrillo, an old track rises gradually, going northwards before joining others which make an east-west crossing at a low point in the hills. At the summit is a memorial to an early pioneer of off-road cycling (long before off-road bikes!) From here the route takes to the heather and the boggy ground south to the high points of the range with a number of ups and downs on sometimes difficult ground.

The way off is west by a concessionary path, still hard on the knees and ankles, until another bridleway is reached; this gives a slow and easy descent to within yards of the starting point.

We are tipping our hat to the pensioners above! We did this walk today, early April 19, we added 2 miles walking to and from the start point! It took us 7 hours... the ground was really bad ???? very boggy and wet and knee deep in either snow or pools of water ???? the way up was much worse than the way down but in these conditions it was very hard going, we lost the directions after the national park sign, we never came to a gate on the right bar one 2m after the gate? However it pretty much went straight down back into the town where we went wrong, great walk but definitely think about the conditions more than we did, parts of it we really bad for us! Did it though!!

This walk was undertaken after a dry period in April. The going underfoot was therefore easier than it would be in the autumn and winter. Visibility was excellent on the day and the views were outstanding. The whole of north Wales was clearly visible. The directions are faultless and three very senior citizens breezed around in 6 1/4 hours including stops to admire the scenery. This walk is for those who enjoy having the hills all to themselves.
