White Castle is one of the highlights of this superb walk across rolling hills in the Welsh Borders. The castle was one of three that formed a triangle of fortresses to control entry into Wales. The castle is in partial ruin, but the stone walls and towers are still standing and the entire castle is surrounded by a moat. Part of the white rendering, still visible in spots on the exterior walls, probably gave the castle its current name. Great Tre-Mill can also be seen on the walk, which is now in ruins, but probably supplied flour to the castle.
A section of the Three Castles Way is followed by the walk, which is a twenty-mile waymarked route that connects the three castles, the other two being Grosmont and Skenfrith.
A section of Offa's Dyke Path is also followed at the start and end of the walk, from Langatock Lingoed to White Castle, which follows the route of Offa's Dyke, that once separated England from Wales. White rendering must be popular in this area - look out for the unusual church at Llangatock Lingoed, fully coated in white rendering.
