Starting in the village of Lumphanan, the walk follows a path close to a minor road before rising up a grassy path (an old military road) onto a stretch of narrow farm lanes. This stretch provides good panoramic views both to the north and to the west. After travelling through some farmland, the route descends to the south with views over Deeside. It then reaches Kincardine O'Neil, the oldest village on Deeside and follows the banks of the River Dee for a short distance.

Going away from the river the walk turns north, passing through some woodland and then starting to rise again, following grassy tracks of an old drove road and reaching open pastureland before making its way back to the start.

Lumphanan is where Macbeth was killed and the site of his burial can be seen in the distance. Also within easy reach is the Peel Ring of Lumphanan, which is listed as an historic monument under the care of Historic Scotland. This mound is the site of a 13th Century keep visited by Edward the 1st of England.

Still a great walk with lots of variety and plenty to see. We were repeating it which is well worth doing. Unfortunately it is not being walked much from the Lumphanan end as the initial ascent up the hill on the old military road is getting quite overgrown. In some places the broom and whins will soon encroach right across the path. Anyone walking it now would be doing a great service if they took a pair of secateurs to trim back branches. A few more pairs of boots passing through would also be useful!

We started from Kincardine O'Neil and took in the Peel Ring of Lumphanan. A lovely walk through varied countryside, and views over to Lochnagar. Lots of wild flowers.
