The main feature of this walk is the canal towpath which will be of particular interest to waterways enthusiasts. The most interesting section is the first part through the town, and except in winter there is a lot happening on the canal here with boats coming and going through the locks. The towpath is also busy with visitors and townsfolk, and two hire boat companies operate from here. Beyond the town the road follows the canal, and if you have one take a walking stick. You are likely to meet some swans who like to spend time on the towpath; they are used to people but may need fending off. Later you may possibly come across a few cows that may also get too nosey. The return route looks on the map to be very flat and industrial but is actually very rural and pleasant for most of the way. The footpath sections are quite easy to follow, with only a couple of fields needing careful navigation; the footbridges and stiles are mainly quite new and in the best of order. The only possibly boring bits are the latter sections that drudge through an industrial estate. This walk also includes instructions for moored canal boat walkers.

The walk is suitable for children, senior citizens and anyone in-between. It is excellent for dogs, but hopeless for wheelchairs and buggies. Suitable footwear will be anything flat soled, but boots will be best and there should be no problems for anyone wearing shorts. On your route there are several shops along the road at the start, and numerous pubs with picnic tables, food and toilets. Outside of the town there are no facilities, however there are several abandoned stiles that make good seating places for 'bring your own coffee'. There is also the pub at the beginning and end, and if you book in advance, you should be able to use the car park and also get a good meal with your pint; an excellent finish to a good walk.

Enjoyed the walk very much, instructions brilliant!- so easy to follow, had to lift my dog over 1 stile only - he was off the lead for nearly all the walk. Definitely an easy walk which was great for my old dog, paths were fine and very quiet (didn't see anyone else for most of the walk), will definitely do the walk again - thank you.
