Of all the slate workings scattered over Snowdonia, the most impressive are those around Blaneau Ffestiniog in the Moelwyns. This walk uses the impressive ruins as an appetiser for a magnificent mountain summit, which is then followed by an interesting, scrambly descent to a scenic traverse above Llyn Stwlan, before finishing off the walk by scrambling down through an old tramway tunnel; a Snowdonia walk without the crowds but with tons of history and great views.
Please bear in mind that these are high mountains; in bad weather and in winter this walk will upgrade to a Mountain Challenge and good navigation skills will be necessary in bad weather conditions as there are Cwm headwalls at points along the walk. Waterproof clothing is essential (even in summer) and additional warm layers should be considered. Proper walking-boots are also necessary. In winter under snow, ice-axe and crampons should be carried and users should know how to use them.
