The walk starts from the historic border town. Located at the mouth of the River Monnow, where it meets the Wye, the town was once in England, but now lies just over the border in Wales. The walk stays on the Welsh side of the border, as it follows Offa's Dyke Path towards the Black Mountains, through woodland and across the gently undulating and peaceful farmland of Monmouthshire.

After leaving Offa's Dyke, the walk heads south to Dingestow, which was once the site of a Norman motte and bailey. There is now a large rectangular mound where it once stood, that can be seen as the walk enters the village. It is possible to access the site and it is well worth having a look round as you go past. The return to Monmouth passes through more woodland, with one steep climb, with great views from the top where you can get a glimpse through the trees.
