Nant Peris - Y Garn - Foel Goch - Mynydd Perfedd - Carnedd Y Filiast - Nant Peris
Perfect Cairns and Greyhound Bitches:
most walk guides take you up Y Garn from the Ogwen side; the ascent there is quite a steep plod, but quick I suppose. This walk makes use of the car park or public transport available in Nant Peris and offers a slightly less steep but still strenuous ascent of the mountain. After Y Garn is gained and a Welsh three-thousand-footer 'bagged', the walk takes in three more mountains in a ridge walk with wonderful views over Tryfan, the Glyders, the Carneddau and out over the Menai Straits to Anglesey. There is the opportunity to look out over the reservoir at Marchlyn Mawr and wonder at the power of its waters that produce thousands of megawatts of electricity at the push of a button inside 'Electric Mountain', Elidir Fawr. Finally the walk takes a steady descent down Cwm Dudodyn and back to the welcome of the Vaynol Arms (if you do pubs that is!)
Please bear in mind that these are high mountains; in bad weather and in winter this walk will upgrade to a Mountain Challenge. Good navigation skills will be necessary in bad weather conditions as there are cwm headwalls at points along the walk. Waterproof clothing is essential (even in summer) and additional warm layers should be considered. Proper walking-boots are also necessary. In winter under snow, ice-axe and crampons should be carried and walkers should know how to use them.
