This mostly level walk starts in the pretty coastal village of Olhos de Água before heading slightly inland along quiet tracks to enjoy the beautiful surrounding countryside.

Meander through Parque Ambiental de Vilamoura – a 200-hectare site of agricultural land and wetlands providing a protected natural habitat for many birds and animals. Species include turtle doves, the little owl (which can be observed during the day), the red fox, hedgehogs, goldfinch and the large psammodromus (a lizard which climbs trees and eats insects and spiders).

The route includes a short, optional detour to a lake overlooked by an excellent bird hide (and information boards). NB: there is a visitor centre; however, this route does not pass it. As you veer away from the Quarteira River look out for an old well to the right of the track. Cross the Quarteira close to Vilamoura to join the beach at Praia da Rocha Baixinha and follow the base of impressive sandstone cliffs for 5kms. There is the option of walking along the clifftop if you prefer.

The final stretch of coast path-walking along the clifftops is short but is the most demanding part of the route and includes several steep descents and climbs.
