Portreath - Tehidy Country Park - Reskajeage Downs - Coastal Path Circular

Portreath is a small Cornish village with a beach, a harbour, a few shops and cafés and a couple of pubs. Really it's off the beaten track for most tourists.

Through Illogon Woods you walk beside a pleasant bubbling stream, emerge onto a farm then cross fields and a track to reach Tehidy Country Park. The walk through the park is about two miles, through trees all the way. It goes around beautiful lakes and follows a stream. It abounds with swans, ducks, all sorts of birds and flowers. Stand still or sit on one of the many benches and the squirrels will come up to you to eat out of your hand.

From there you emerge into Combe and then walk through a field up onto the clifftops at Reskajeage Downs and onto the Coastal Path. At one point there is a steep descent and climb. Once on the path there are views inland across Cambourne to the monument and castle on the Carn Brea Hills. As you walk there are fantastic sea views backwards as far as the Godrevy Island lighthouse and forward up to Portreath.

Along the way you will pass Bassets Cove, Ralph's Cupboard and Gull Rock. On the final headland are wild ponies and a bird's-eye view down onto Portreath.

This coastal path undulates and there are two steep climbs to consider on this route, one of about 80m and one of about 30m.

Lovely walk. At waypoint 6, you need to turn right along the bridlepath just BEFORE the GATE & barns. This then picks up waypoint 7 at the end of the path. Also, at waypoint 15 just to be aware of 2 VERY steep (45°)gradients partly with steps & with the last uphill part just as you pass the sign for Carvannel Downs. Photos available but not sure how/where to post these.

The Countryside Information Officer has confirmed that there is no PROW through Trengrove Farm at waymark 6 so please bypass via Roy’s new instructions provided. Reports have also been made to the local authority regarding the public footpath inland at Porth Cadjack Cove (an alternative to Roy’s route guide) and a countryside officer has been actioned to deal with this.

A lovely mixed walk, however: (1) At waypoint-6, Trengove Farm, SW663443, 'Continue forward between barn on the right and converted barns on the left.' The gate into the farm yard was well and truly chained shut, denying access forwards 'between the barn and converted barns', necessitating a considerable lengthy detour by road to reach Tehidy Park. (2) The Footpath skirting the edge of Carvannel Downs valley at Porth Cadjack Cove SW643447 along with the access stiles to the footpath are non-existent, necessitating negotiating the steep 45-metre decent and accent of the valley (which was not planned. Apart from these two-navigation obstacles, this was a very pleasant walk. Patrick Rigley

Beautiful walk, we thoroughly enjoyed it. Just coming out of Trehidy Park there is now a new, family-run tearoom, which makes a great place for a pitstop, called Polcrowjy Tea Room. The coastal path at the end is lovely.
