Radcot boasts the oldest surviving bridge across the Thames, where the Mercia - Wessex road crossed the river. It became an important commercial junction, where stone was loaded onto barges for transporting to Oxford and London and a canal was built here where larger vessels could be handled. Nowadays, the canals have become backwaters of the Thames and many boats can be seen moored up. There are now three bridges carrying the road over the river and in between there is a very popular pub, with a garden on the banks of the river.
The walk follows the Thames Path as far as Kelmscott, where the river is crossed via Eaton Footbridge and return to Radcot is across fields, but never straying far from the Thames.
A short detour can be taken to Kelmscott Manor, the country home of William Morris, the poet, craftsman and socialist.
