The walk starts from the Ridgeway overlooking Wantage. At 200 metres above sea level, there are far-reaching views to the north as you follow the ridge at the start of the walk. The walk passes the memorial to Lord Wantage, an impressive column standing proudly on the ridge, with commanding views over the vale below. Lord Wantage was a distinguished soldier and one of the first to be awarded the Victoria Cross in the Crimean War. He was one of the founders of the British Red Cross. The copses of trees in the vale below were planted by Lord Wantage and are believed to represent the battle lines at Alma.

After leaving the Ridgeway, the walk crosses the border into Berkshire, to reach the sleepy and attractive village of Farnborough. At 220 metres above sea level, it is the highest village in the county. The walk continues across gently rolling countryside to rejoin the Ridgeway and following another section of the national trail back to the start.

Completed this walk on a fabulous sunny and warm November 2020 day. Really great walk, very dog friendly & fabulous dry ground even after lots of rain. I have to admit i don’t think I have ever walked across a bigger field than the one at no:6. Fabulous views and we found a bench with a view in the graveyard, enjoyed the view whilst having our picnic.
