A walk offering a mixture of Derbyshire terrain, from gritstone to limestone areas, with some heather moorland and an ancient monument or two thrown in. The route is not difficult to follow, with much of the area being well-walked; paths are easy to spot.

The area around Stanton Woodhouse has recently been subject to an unsuccessful protest against plans to extend and re-open old quarries in the area for high grade building-stone. The makeshift tents and tree-houses were still present at the time of this walk.

There are some interesting rock features on Stanton Moor as well as several tumuli, not forgetting the Nine Ladies stone circle. On the return, some of the green lanes used were originally packhorse trails.

The hillside village of Winster in the middle of the walk is worth further exploration, with its narrow steep streets, some of which have featured in episodes of the 'Peak Practice' TV medical drama programme. There is also a National Trust-owned market-hall, making the main road through the village even narrower.

There are two pubs in Winster; this walk uses the Miner's Standard at the top of the the village. It offers a good-value menu and choice beers and also welcomes walkers. In addition there are several bench tables outside to the rear, to enjoy your food in the open if you prefer.

Very enjoyable walk and the route was fairly easy to follow. It did feel a bit longer than stated so when we got home I traced the route out on memory map and it gave it as 16.1 km and 515m ascent.
