The walk is in what is still a relatively quiet area, although Bowland has its devotees, me included. The Salter Fell track, which is a Roman road, was described by Wainwright as 'the finest moorland walk in Britain'. This route takes in the highest and the finest section. Whitendale still thrills me as it did when I first saw it - an oasis of green in the middle of the heather of the fells, whilst the views across Ribblesdale and to the north from Dunsop Fell make this a worthy addition.

Phew! My longest walk in a while but a varied and interesting one! The Roman road was a delight however the descent adjacent to Whitendale River was tricky at times travelling across the muddy slope meant I fell over several times. Dunsop Head was blowing a gale and the descent was marred by coming across three newly dead decaying sheep in the space of 300m. Goodness knows what had been going on. Overall I enjoyed the day. Well done Jim once again! One or two revisions to note: WP2 - the step stile is no longer signed 'Croasdale' just a public footpath. WP19 - Mytton Farm Crafts closed down three years ago and is simply Mytton Farm now. Directions through the courtyard still apply.
