South Down Car Park - White Horse Hill - Osmington - Osmington Mill - Ringstead - South Down CP

A thoroughly enjoyable walk with a bit of climbing to keep you fit and healthy, but with this easy route nothing too strenuous for most walkers. A pub halfway round with good food and a play area for the kids, lots and lots of butterflies, wildflowers and fantastic coastal views to admire along the way.

This section of the coastal path is good for children too, as there are few places for them to drop off! Take some time from the route to spend on the beach if you can, or maybe fly your kite from the car park, which is just a field and feels as though it's on top of the world!

This is a lovely walk, especially on a sunny autumn Sunday like today. But we would suggest a few adjustments to navigation. First, the South Downs (Ringstead Bay) car park is not off the A352 but the A353. Perhaps there's been a change of road numbers? Head towards Osmington on the A353 and turn left towards Ringstead, continuing along the road with no turn-offs until you reach the car park. At WP6, when you reach Osmington, the track becomes Church Lane, from which you turn left into Village Street after a while. But Village Street soon turns sharp right, when it becomes Chapel Lane. After you turn left along the main road, you'll find that the footpath at WP8 has been moved further down the road, and is now just after the entrance to Craig's Dairy. The route is then straightforward down to Osmington Mills and the Smuggler's Inn.

Some fantastic views on this walk, especially the coastal ones when on the coast path after the pub. Part of this path was closed, nearing the beach cafe. We detoured onto the stoney beach and found the cafe, and an ice cream, that way. Bit of a long steady climb back to the car, but worth it again for the views. Walking details still fine

I did this walk on 24/12/07 and it is very enjoyable. Note that at the end of waymark 8, after the path bends to the left, it now leads into a silage mound and there are no visible direction signs. Go tound the mound on its right and follow the left hand field boundary to a metal gate. Go ove the gate and turn right down the field to pass through another gate in the left corner and then join the cost path. Turn left along the coast path shortly to rejoin the intended route at the boards mentioned in waymark 9.
