This is exclusively a coastal walk that involves parking up at the southern end of South Shields seafront and walking north along the two beaches to explore both of the breakwaters on the southern side of the River Tyne Estuary. The route then heads south along the promenade where you catch a bus down to Roker Piers at the mouth of the River Wear in Sunderland. The remainder of the walk is simply following the coastal path north back to South Shields.

From the car park the route heads north, up the beach to intersect firstly the South Pier and then the smaller Herd Groyne (Breakwater). The walk then turns south along the promenade where you catch a bus to Roker, just north of the Wearmouth Estuary. From here the walking route heads North again and follows the coastal path as it passes the seaside resort of Seaburn and then the coastal village of Whitburn, site of disused MOD Firing Ranges and the immaculately preserved Souter Lighthouse. The remainder of the walk back to South Shields closely hugs the coastline where there are opportunities to observe the many offshore sea stacks in the numerous isolated coves that are colonised by flocks of seabirds.
