The History of Moor Divock

Moor Divock is an area with a rich history dating back thousands of years and this walk explores most of the amazing area.

Starting off along the roadside on the south side of the moor, the route heads straight up to the Cop Stone. This stone is believed to form part of a 20m-wide ring cairn and also forms part of a stone alignment with a set of two stones and another ring cairn to the north.

The route leads north-west along the track with optional visits to other ring cairns and continues up to White Raise, which is a large burial cairn. The cairn has been excavated and the burial chamber is open and an amazing sight.

The walk then leads over to The Cockpit Stone Circle. This beautiful stone circle consists of around 78 stones, is about 28m in diameter and once had two concentric circles.

The route then follows the old Roman road of High Street before turning uphill and heading for the limestone plateau of Heughscar Hill and its excellent view down to Ullswater and to Moor Divock.
