From the historic church of Traquair (spend a few minutes looking around),the walk passes the impressive Glen House of the Tennant( Lord Glenconnor )family, and the associated Kennels Cottage, Old School House, and Home farm.
An earlier property on the site is purported to be the home of John Porteous who was the catalyst for the Edinburgh riots of the mid 1700s.
The route rises gently up the glen to the remote hamlet of Glenshiel Banks, where only one property now shows evidence of habitation, and then somewhat more steeply through the heather over the shoulder of Peat Hill.
You will then descend through the forest to the Douglas Burn and the ruin of a Borders Tower.
The return along the SUW may encourage you to tackle this Long Distance Trail as you admire the panoramas and views to distant Traquair and down over the outward route and Glen House.
