Rising high above its fellows, Penhill dominates Lower Wensleydale with its distinctive shape. This walk takes us from the little Dales village of West Burton up to the top of Black Scar Crags. From here, it's an invigorating edge walk with views along Wensleydale, over to the large cairn at Penhill Beacon. I've thrown in a couple of steep descents for the return leg, as if this walk wasn't challenging enough.

I did this walk yesterday with my brother. I found the route finding easy to follow. The weather was fine and we had fantastic views. All in all a great walk.

Sorry for the confusion, Keith. I've now clarified the text at waymark 9.

I did this route with a group from West Witton last weekend joining the route at point 9. I found route finding to the top unclear, but bore right and up steep face. We missed the openings but climbed a gate. Ordnance survey does not show new access track on top, and the well used foottrack follows the wall south to trig point and Pen'Man'cairn (I spoke to one of the guys who built it). Route back to West Witton is good. The Fox and Hounds at West Witton, hosted by Andrew and Nola Blackburn is excellent for food and drinks.
