This walk, which includes a section of the Pennine Way, is in the College Valley. The first part along the valley floor is easy but thereafter the going is quite tough. The temptation is to pause frequently and admire the view as you climb Red Cribs, Auchope Cairns and The Schil, which will disguise any need to stop and draw breath. The three descents are steep and are taxing on the knees but for all that, it’s a grand walk and an experience not to be missed - provided you are reasonably fit.
College Valley is privately owned but twelve cars a day are allowed to pass Hethpool. Limited access helps to keep this valley unspoilt.
Note for dog owners Check restrictions before going to this area at www.countrysideaccess.gov.uk to see the restricted areas. It is possible that dogs may not be able to go on this walk and others nearby until May 2010.
