A walk around the village of Ashwell with its handsome 14th Century church, built in the prosperous years when it was a market town. The High Street still has some timber-framed buildings from the 15th to 17th Centurue and the town nestles among a spread of minor roads from surrounding villages. The walk has a 'far from the maddening crowd' feel despite being in one of the most populated counties of England. It is mostly flat 'fen-like' land with big wide skies, but also has hills with extensive views, somewhat of a rarity in these Herts - Cambs borders. It skirts a chalk scarp where springs are one of the sources of the River Cam and the rolling hills give a rich colour to the green / blue grass. The church tower is visible for much of the walk. The scenery must have remained the same for centuries and has an almost timeless air.
