This walk was originally submitted by Brian & Anne Sandland. Walkingworld is very grateful for Sid Marks taking over the walk, March 2021. Walk titles and route directions may have changed since the walk was first published.

You could, of course, shorten this walk by catching a train from Great Bentley, or again you could combine it with part(s) or all of Walks 3006 and 3008 by a variety of methods. This section of the walk from Colchester North Station to Clacton-on-Sea Station takes you along the length of Great Bentley's village green (the largest in England). Despite being crossed by roads, it has a cricket pitch and near the pavilion you will find an interesting plaque with details of alleged witchcraft in former days. You will also pass close to Frating Abbey and Great Bentley Church. There is an interesting variety of farmland along the route, with orchards, traditional pastoral and arable fields and a huge area in which salad vegetables are grown on a grand scale in summer.
