This walk shows the beauty of Swanbourne Lake, which dates back to the Domesday Book and which used to provide the supply of water to the mill. The lake and mill was the last major painting by Constable in 1837, entitled 'Arundel Mill and Castle'. Rowing-boats are normally available for hire in season. The walk through part of the 1,240-acre park gives you an insight into its particular beauty. The section of the walk from Waymarks 3 to 12 follows the route of the Monarch's Way, which at 615 miles is the second longest waymarked walking trail in Britain. It follows the flight of Charles II after his defeat at the Battle of Worcester in 1651. When the River Arun is reached, excellent views across North Stoke, Houghton and Amberley can be had, tracing the course of the river as it winds its way through the wide valley in the South Downs, along which passes the famous South Downs Way. This particular walk can easily be completed in a morning, giving you time to explore either the beautiful town of Arundel or its superb castle - not to be missed. The excellent Wildfowl and Wetland Reserve is almost opposite the main park entrance. Refreshments can be obtained at the park entrance and at the Black Rabbit pub, which is in a most picturesque setting on the banks of the river, near the end of the walk.

Walked 18.07.2021. This is a really lovely walk with stunning views and very easy to follow. The first ascent is a killer mind so be prepared to stop a few times if you're (like us), not the youngest!. Directions spot on and some great variety. There are a lot of stiles to get over and the riverside section was not overly pleasant as you don't get to see much of the river but still a nice walk. Parking was easy and free (even in the height of summer) but avoid this walk if the weather is above about 25 degrees as it is exposed with not much shelter! We rate it about 9/10.

Walked on 26/03/12. Really enjoyed variety in this walk. One short stiff climb only. Instructions very clear. Very good lunch in Black Rabbit. Didn't find the stiles a problem!

This is a super little circular with huge amounts of variety and contrast. The kiosk at Swanbourne Lake offer shot drinks and snacks if required. After a very picturesque stroll beside Swanbourne, the route gradually heads up onto the top of The downs with some stunning views to absorb. A Gradual descent through farm and wood land leads down to the River Arun and the Arun valley. The final leg heads back to Swanbourne along the banks of The river Arun via The Black Rabbitt ifd you fancy a pint and a bite to eat. An Excellently compact all rounder. Nice One Dave. Andy

Did this walk on Wed 20-Aug-08. Highly recommended - interesting variety of terrain and views. unfortunately St Leonard's church locked so couldn't see inside. Lunch at the Black Rabbit by the river. Very pleasant.

Walked this one on Thurs.25th May. Excellent route and well described. Good views and varied going-both downland and riverside. Had been recent heavy rain so was just a little damp underfoot. Still you can't have it all! Nice walk Dave and thank you. Ray Churcher
