Appley Bridge and Parbold Hill

West Lancashire means the Lancashire Plain to most of us, but there is a series of hills, outliers of the Pennines, which lie along its edge. Harrock Hill, Parbold Hill and the height topped by Ashurst's Beacon are among them. There is a good network of footpaths and excellent views from their summits over the surrounding flat land and the Irish Sea. This walk starts along the towpath of the Leeds - Liverpool Canal before climbing to Parbold Hill and returning by a wooded glen (indeed the Fairy Glen!) on its way to the station.

I did this walk on a Saturday with a group of friends and 7 labradors. We all had a fabulous time, this walk is excellent and we will definitely be back to do it again! It was offlead for the dogs all along the canals, most of the way up the hill towards the Wiggin Tree, lunch was had at the Wiggin Tree as they had tables outside for us to sit at with the dogs. Once we got to the Fairy Glen it was offlead again for the dogs, all the way (practically) back to Appley Bridge village. The only stile was fab for dogs, with a hole for them to run through while humans climbed over it. All in all, highly recommended for dogs, and a great walk with fabulous views.
