This walk enters the New Forest from its NE boundary and is on the A35 between Southampton and Lyndhurst. The walk starts at Ashurst Station, which is on the line between Southampton and Brockenhurst. Anywhere on the walk there is the strong possibility of a close encounter with one or more New Forest ponies, which are free to roam the woods and heaths.

The walk does stay close to the railway line but the scenery varies from open heathland to quite dense woodland. The second half of the walk passes over Matley Heath, where the vista expands with good views across the heath to the distant forest.

The last section passes through Ashurst Campsite and then good food and drinks are available at The New Forest Hotel or The Happy Cheese pub. The walk finishes at the adjacent Ashurst Station or alternatively, walk over the bridge back to the car park.

Lovely walk, lots of New Forest ponies to be seen at the moment! Got a little bit confused at Step 4 and missed the right path so ended up taking an extra mile detour into Matley Wood but thanks to the map managed to get back on track. Had lunch at Happy Cheese pub before we started - lots of new renovation going on there to make it even more family friendly - new paving and tables in garden and a new climbing construction for kids. So definitely one I recommend and will do again when my son is old enough to come with me.

Great walk, easy to navigate and took very close to the estimated time to complete. Lots of areas where dogs can be let off the lead, no busy roads to cross and only a very short length along a road to walk at the end. The terrain was varied and pretty. Will walk again. Tip if you are traveling by train is to head towards Ashurst village to start, not the pub side.
