Barnes and Putney straddle the loop of the River Thames which forms part of the annual Oxford & Cambridge Boat Race. The walk takes us through chic and pricey Barnes before passing The Wetlands Centre. The central section takes us along the Embankment opposite Fulham Football Club, passing numerous boathouses belonging to clubs, schools and colleges. At Putney Bridge, St Mary's Church is the site of the 1647 Putney Debates, a fascinating period of history when the New Model Army (later suppressed by Cromwell) discuss the revolutionary concept of 'one man one vote'. Across the river is Fulham Palace. We walk through the park along the north side of the river and visit the palace, once the summer residence of the Bishops of London. Here there is a museum, extensive grounds and a secret botanic garden with herbs. Finally we walk through the old pottery-making area of Putney before ending our walk at Putney Bridge Underground, with its frequent connections to London.

A superb gentle stroll for a fine summers evening. Good directions and some interesting things to see along the way. We walked late (8pm) so didn't get to see the Palace. A good alternative to using transport (as this is a linear walk)... at point 9, turn right as directed to walk on Fulham Palace Road. At the mini roundabout go straight on to Fulham High Street. Re-cross Putney Bridge then turn right into Lower Richmond Road. Follow this (bear right at next mini roundabout) until it reaches Mill Hill Road, which leads into Station road and back to Barnes green. You should be able to do this quite easy if you get a streetmap of the area. This is a nice alternative to getting a tube back but lengthens this to a 6.5 mile walk. Good walk, great directions, 10/10.
