An easy walk which includes a section of the Trent & Mersey Canal towpath together with a stretch of a former railway, 'The Salt Line'.

The Salt Line opened in 1852 and supported a thriving industry based on salt. There were numerous brine shafts and salt works in the area. Brine was heated in large open pans to leave salt used in the production of washing soda, glass, soap and detergents. A passenger service also ran daily to take people to Sandbach.

Today the line takes you through farmland and woodland, with streams, pools and rough grassland. There are glades of coppiced willow and hazel, with some areas managed as wild flower meadows.

Found the walk to be enjoyable, unfortunately the Canal shop has now closed. The walk to point 1 from the car park is about a mile. There is a lot of construction work going on the M6 bridges which means closures of the lanes and salt line every now and then for bridge repairs.

Canal walks are never at their best during Winter. Water can be frozen and paths muddy. And then their's the Salt Line which is heavily used by Dog Walkers, many it seems who seem to think they don't have to clean up after their dogs and others who think it's ok to put the mess in a bag and then discard the bag. Disgusting behaviour by a small minority i'm sure. Other than above it was a good 5.6 mile walk worth a second visit when the weather is a bit dryer.

Good for wet weather, most of the walk is on laid paths. There is a lot of traffic noise from the M6 for a significant proportion of the walk.
