Although in Glenmore Forest, most of the walk is across open moorland dotted with old pines. The early section climbs gradually towards Cairngorm and Lairig Ghru, the latter providing a through pass to Braemar and Blair Atholl; there is then a gentle descent to Loch an Eilein (Loch of the Island). The walk around the loch offers splendid views and there are several picturesque picnic sites.
