Forge Car Park - Brecon Canal - Gilwern - Old Railway Line - Forge Car Park

The Abergavenny & Brecon Canal is said to be the prettiest in the country. I can well believe it. The canal meanders between trees and fields, with lovely views across the Usk Valley. There are kingfishers here and you are certain to see heron as well as mallard. This stretch has recently been altered near Gilwern, due to extensive road improvements which closed the canal for a while. If a visit to a pub helps your walk there is a choice available. There is a notice near the first bridge you come to, as well as the Bridgend and Navigation Inns in Gilwern and the Lion next to the footbridge over the A465.

8/5/2017 - Philip Horn

A Colleague and myself completed this walk in July 2017. Instruction 3 ~ There are major roadworks on the A465 and the 'Lion Inn' has been demolished and a new footbridge is being built approx. 100 yards east of the existing footbridge (still open July 2017). When the new footbridge is opened, I would anticipate the instructions should read cross the footbridge, turn right along the road until you reach a minor road junction, then continue left up 'Station Road'.
